All delegates to the Critical Thinking Academy will stay at St. John's College, Cambridge University. Delegates will be assigned to either single or twin-bedded rooms, each with central heating, wash basin, tea and coffee making facilities, shaving point, towels, and toiletries. A considerable number of rooms will have en-suite facilities and all rooms have views overlooking the College grounds. Otherwise, bathrooms, WCs and shower rooms are shared between two or three delegates. Rooms will be assigned randomly. A desk and reading light are provided in each room. Some ground floor rooms are available for delegates with minor disabilities. Delegates in wheelchairs will find difficulty manoeuvring through the Old Courts and should be accommodated.

Beds are made and the rooms serviced daily. The College has Tennis and Squash courts available for delegates' use for a small charge. The college doesn't supply equipment for activities.

A multi-gym (unsupervised) and snooker room are located beneath the Fisher Building.
A Fitness Centre offering a full range of equipment is situated in New Court.

College punts are available to hire from Easter-October.

Croquet is available by negotiation. Limited car parking is available.
Parking for coaches is not available, but they may enter via the Northampton Street entrance to drop delegates off. This entrance is rather narrow, so please reverse into the College when dropping off delegates at this entrance. 
 

Entry to the College should be made via the Cripps Porters' Lodge, Northampton Street entrance.

On the day of departure, checkout is 9:00 am.

Public telephones are located opposite the Cripps Porters' Lodge and phone cards can be purchased for the porter on duty. Anyone wishing to contact a delegate should call the telephone number allotted to the Conference Office. If an emergency arises, delegates should be contacted on (01223) 338600.

The Cripps Porter's Lodge is Manned for 24 Hours a day and porters are a great source of information — please do not hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

The nearest first aid point to the Fisher building and the School of Pythagoras is the Cripps Porter's Lodge. The Main Lodge in First Court and the Fourecourt Lodge in Chaple Court are also first aid points. In the event of medical service being required, the porter on duty should be contacted — he will call the appropriate medical authority.

Foreign delegates: Please be advised to purchase adaptors for any electrical equipment you wish to bring and ensure you have medical insurance.

Gatwick, Heathrow and Luton airports are within two hours drive, and Stansted is just a 40 minute journey.

Here are some of the big reasons why:

  1. Many people believe that critical thinking should be free and that scholars qualified to teach critical thinking should do so for free. Accordingly, they do not think they should have to pay for critical thinking textbooks, courses, or other resources when there is "so much free material online" - despite how erroneous that material may be.
  2. There are many misguided academicians, and some outright charlatans, pushing forth and capitalizing on a pseudo-, partial, or otherwise impoverished concept of critical thinking.
  3. Little to no funding is designated for critical thinking professional development in schools, colleges, or universities, despite the lip service widely given to critical thinking (as is frequently found in mission statements).
  4. Most people, including faculty, think they already know what critical thinking is, despite how few have studied it to any significant degree, and despite how few can articulate a coherent, accurate, and sufficiently deep explanation of it.
  5. People rarely exhibit the necessary level of discipline to study and use critical thinking for reaching higher levels of self-actualization. In part, this is due to wasting intellectual and emotional energy on fruitless electronic entertainment designed to be addictive and profitable rather than educational and uplifting.
  6. On the whole, fairminded critical thinking is neither understood, fostered, nor valued in educational institutions or societies.
  7. People are increasingly able to cluster themselves with others of like mind through alluring internet platforms that enable them to validate one another's thinking - even when their reasoning is nonsensical, lopsided, prejudiced, or even dangerous.
  8. Critical thinking does not yet hold an independent place in academia. Instead, "critical thinking" is continually being "defined" and redefined according to any academic area or instructor that, claiming (frequently unsupported) expertise, steps forward to teach it.

As you see, increasingly powerful trends against the teaching, learning, and practice of critical thinking entail extraordinary challenges to our mission.
